The subject of a painting, what a painting is; you can't explain it - it's impossible. Explanations don't seem necessary to me, either of painting or of other artistic fields. I don't believe that it's possible to give an explanation of a painting. It seems to me that explanations inevitably fall short. At any rate, I have no need of them myself, not even in the case of something that I don't understand at all.
